The Residence on Madison, 1080 Madison Avenue: Review and Ratings

between East 81st Street & East 82nd Street View Full Building Profile

Review of 1080 Madison Avenue by Carter Horsley

This clean-cut, restrained but elegant, limestone-clad, apartment tower was erected in 1981. It is a condominium and has only 35 apartments.

It was developed by Jacques T¿z¿ of Sefrius, an American subsidiary of Union Internationale Immobili¿re, and designed by Thierry W. Despont and Emil Steo.

The building, known as La Residence, has a one-step-up entrance that leads to very handsome, paneled lobby with a concierge. The building has some handsome balconies inset in the tower's base facing the avenue, some 13-foot-high living rooms, discrete air-conditioners and mahagony-framed windows. It has no garage, no health club, no sidewalk landscaping and no roof deck.

It is across the avenue from the attractive, red-brick P.S. 6, one of the city's best public schools and one block away from the entrance to the Metropolitan Museum of Art on Fifth Avenue. This neighborhood has attractive boutiques and two supermarkets are a few blocks up Madison Avenue. There is good bus service but the subway is several blocks away at 86th Street and Lexington Avenue. An entrance to Central Park is nearby at 80th and Fifth Avenue.
